When you say that Hubbard did indeed compose this but not in the matter I would have expected, what does that mean?

I don't think he could read/write music, he played several instruments, but from what I can gather it was all just by ear, winging it more or less. He's not actually performing this song, what he would do was to sit down at his organ with a tape recorder and play segments and explain what it was he wanted the song to be. That tape would be the composition more or less. Edgar Winter talked about this in regards to Mission Earth.
