Joshua's Altar on Mount Ebal north of Shechem. God commanded the Israelites to build this altar in Deuteronomy 11:29-30; 27:1-8 and its construction is later reported in the Book of Joshua 8:30-35. The remains of the altar were unearthed by Israeli archaeologist Adam Zertal in the 1980s. The Torah commands the Israelites to perform a ceremony with half the nation standing on Mount Ebal proclaiming a curse and the other half facing them on Mount Gerizim proclaiming a blessing. Earlier explorers failed to find the altar because they looked for it on the southern slope of Mount Eval facing the mountain identified by Samaritan tradition as Mount Gerizim. Zertal's discovery of the altar on the eastern slope proves that the Samaritans misidentified the site of a pagan Roman temple as Mount Gerizim. The real Mount Gerizim must be Har Kabir facing the altar directly to the east. Access to the altar has been restricted since Arab terrorists opened fire on a group of Israeli hikers on October 19, 2000 during the opening days of the Second Intifada. Rabbi Benjamin Herling, a father of eight, bled to death on the mountain while uniformed officers of the Palestinian security forces continued firing on the civilian hikers for eleven hours. The survivors including women carrying their babies were eventually rescued by the Israeli army. I took this video on January 16, 2012 when the Israeli army authorized the first group of Israelis in twelve years to hike Mount Ebal under heavy military escort.
