The speed you experience online has nothing to do with home network. You experience the difference when the transfers are between devices on your network. On the internet your only going as fast as your slowest component and that's usually the servers on the other end you have NO control over. Typical websites are about 400k. The purpose of a faster router is for multi-devices on your network. I have three 360s on my network we play simultaniously and there's big differences from G to N.

Would a wireless N adapter still require a wireless N router, meaning would the adapter still function with a wireless G router? Also, would any USB wireless N adapter work on an xbox 360 (without the built-in wifi), or does it still require the xbox wireless adapters only?

@Sayerservante Yes it will function, however you not get the benefits that Wireless N offers.
