...and they added that dialogue that's not in the script when Aunt Eller comes out and gives her the dress. I LOVE the London cast but I just don't like the idea of copying something verbatim. When we did this, I too took some ideas from the London cast but we also tried to make it our own. I did do Laurey in overalls, but the director had me change right before Many a new Day into a dress because he thought it was more appropriate for that scene as well as this one.

They *really* tried to copy the London cast. Even the backdrop has that swoopy, half-moon floor thing. The hand-hurting thing while Curly is singing, Curly on one knee singing in an "opera" voice that's supposed to be funny, Curly singing loudly in her ear at the end...

actually its 1907 but w/e

There is something incongrueous about Curly singing a love song to a woman dressed as a man. While they are supposed to be picking peaches, this can be done in a dress. There were women's work clothes that were dresses and skirts then. Women who did hard labor would of course wear jeans or overalls. But this is not hard labor. It's also not a romantic scene staged this way.

the script for oklahoma has a 'wardrobe plot'
it doesn't say she wears overalls. she only wears dresses. i imagine it would be incredibly unladylike.

ok, Laurey wasn't the one who worked on the farm. Jud did. In fact, there's even a line in the play where Aunt Eller says "Two women couldn't run a farm, you know that."
And yes, u all have very good points. Laurey should not have been in overalls
-
Laurey could have been a tomboy, but even so, it that time period you would NOT wear overalls...even if you were working alot outside. She didn't do all the man's work...that's what Jud was for.
it's a poor quality video but yes, thanks!
