If you've never tried System Shock 2, I highly recommend that you do so, especially if you played and enjoyed BioShock (this is an earlier game by the same developers).

Unfortunately, a lot of people have trouble playing System Shock 2 because of the primitive graphics. Players are put off by muddy textures and very low-poly models that give people in the game triangle faces and dolphin feet. This is a real shame because System Shock 2 is one of the best games ever made.

Fortunately, System Shock 2 has a very devoted fanbase that is dedicated to continually improving the game. So now you can mod it to remove its worst offenses without impacting the great gameplay one bit. This video demonstrates the three mods that I regularly use:

1. System Shock 2 Rebirth

This mod increases the poly count of the models and improves their texturing. Suddenly people look like people!

2. The Shock Texture Upgrade Project

Or SHTUP for short. This mod improves the textures of many in-game surfaces. Now you can actually read the monitors!

3. DeepFriedBeer's Sound Upgrade for System Shock 2
http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php/topic,27.new.html

This mod replaces many sounds in the game (including all the weapon sounds) with higher-quality, more realistic versions.

In order to manager your mods I highly recommend the System Shock 2 Mod Manager.

It makes enabling and disabling mods a snap.

Have fun in the world of System Shock 2!

  • The original hybrid looks scarier... because the low textures, you really can't tell what it's supposed to be so you gotta use your imagination.

  • @ActionCarl All cogent, valid arguments. Of course, that doesn't mean you're not wrong.

  • @GGGG761 Lol, you get the skill level which is required.

  • I remember this game when I was young

  • how do you hack the key pads mine says i don't have the skill yet???

  • @norchaaa get the latest ss2 mod manager.... in the tools option of the manager there is an option to fix the inventory bug... had the same problem.... but now it works extremely well... :D

  • Original is so much better.

  • @Deathshuck I disagree. Maybe I've been spoiled by modern graphics, but when something looks too unlike anything human, I don't find it scary.

  • @Reptiloid87 doesn't mean those who enjoy the game can't just upgrade the graphics every now and then.

  • @ianwilder244 That's because it is. It's a stock sound effect used in many different games, movies, and TV shows throughout the years.

  • @ianwilder244 omg spot on!! good ear

  • @ActionCarl you fucking stupid -_-
