Abriginal Bush Law - 1 of 2 - My Country Australia - BBC Culture Documentary, recorded 10.04.2010 & The Forgotten Generation - BBC News America Is Bush Law the answer?
"Despite the countless government initiatives and billions of dollars invested in attempting to reduce it, crime in the Northern Territory Aboriginal population is at an all-time high. This is because there are two legal systems. One of them is 40,000 years old. The other is 200 years old and has been imposed without consultation or respect. Whilst only mainstream Australian law is legally recognised, the simple truth is that Aboriginal people living in remote Australia pay more attention to Aboriginal law.'' : Film-maker and lawyer Danielle Loy talks to Dave Richards from Alice Online about her film Bush Law."

  • this documentary gives me a bit of hope for us. Its only in the past 10-5 years that we can spread messages like this. I bet you 99% of any western person doesn't know about this. I didn't know about this and I have a small bit of knowledge about other cultures, other ways of living life. There are many people who have not even left their country once, some not even the city they were born in!! Education IS the key.

  • @philateliceun > Thanks, I think you are right ... The important points fom my side are 1) that the documentary is available & I have tagged it with relevant key-words, so no one has any excuse to remain ignorant. 2) It might not seem like much, but right now over 4.000 people have watched this upload ... That is 4.000 more than none ... Cheers, Runi Toconillo

  • How come if 'white fellas' have been here for almost 150 years they still call us visitors?

  • I think its stems from this idea that humans are these god creatures, elevate above the animal kingdom, it even has a bad stigma, calling yourself an animal in the western world. This is the biggest lie of all. We ARE animals who live in and of the NATURAL world. We have been hunters who lived in tents in total harmony with nature for 90% of our humanoid existence. That is how it SHOULD be! We are not Gods! We can't live without nature! We ARE nature!!!

  • Biggest lesson I learned from watching true people who live on their own in harmony with nature is that having planes, computers, electricity doesn't make you a more advanced being. It really doesn't. Its very easy to sit as a western person and look at the marvels of western culture, the cities, the ships, the planes, the networks, etc. etc. and you think you are the greatest being on this planet while it means very little. It makes some aspects of life easier but a lot gets far too complicated

  • Damn! Makes me ashamed to be a western person!! The first time I went to the jungle my life was changed. Most people living here don't know any better, they think that how they live is life, is how its supposed to be. They think western society is the greatest thing ever and give it an almost godlike status but its all fake. Western society is really one big theater show, its all about keeping you happy with material products, like the laptop I am typing from, so that a few can gain power.

  • Damn im proud to be aboriginal !

  • Sincere apology delivered.

Rather obvious that the woman did not know that she was doing wrong; Rather obvious that the CO enacted an indigenous Australian appreciation course for his staff.

Rather obvious that the woman now knows not to send in a male colleague when no other women are there to be seen.

    Sincere apology received.

  • Mr. Bunter is absolutely right, when he observed the biases and discrimination of the various systems of legal views,

Whites had the BIG GUN, so they FORCED their "law" onto others, whereas those without the big gun (like the Natives & Aborigines) couldn't force invaders like the Whites to respect Native legal codes & norms.

It's one of those cosmic events, where SOME demolish others, although all can argue soundly FOR their world view, in a more neutral place & time & terrain.

  • brilliant post real eye opener
