Hello Sunshine (A Jonas Love Story)
Chapter 52
Helen's POV
No more than ten minutes had passed after my lips had locked with Joe's did the lights black out. I sat up immediately and tried to find my way to the door. I had been too busy with Joe earlier to realize it had started raining, and raining hard. (Are you okay?) I exclaimed when I heard Joe tumble off the side of the bed. (Yeah.) He said walking towards the sound of my voice. The storm clouds had blocked out the sun making it disturbingly dark in the room. (I think there's some candles under the sink, and I know there's some matches under there as well.) I said trying to find the bathroom door. (I don't like the dark.) I heard him whisper a few feet behind me. I shook my head even though I knew he couldn't see it. (Joseph Adam Jonas. Are you afraid of the dark?) I asked teasingly still trying to find the door handle with my hand. (No, I just don't like not being able to see you.) He answered, his voice almost mocking. I laughed, I hoped he could hear my smile when I replied, (Is that right?) I had finally found the door handle and walked inside the bathroom. I ducked down next to the sink after opening the cabinet doors and reached my hand inside. It only took me a few seconds to find the box of matches. I set them to the side before pulling out about six or seven candles. I lighted the first candle, almost burning my hand on the match, then lighted another and walked it over to where I found Joe standing. (Come get these and set them around the room.) I said giving him the candle and walking back to where the rest were. Joe came over and picked up the ones that already had flames and distributed them around the room like I had asked him. After the last candle was light, I sat down on the floor, next to where Joe had sat down. (I think we should play a game.) Joe said, I could clearly see him then because of the surrounding candle light, but it was still raining cats and dogs outside. (Such as?) I replied putting my hand to the side of my face. I felt the small, still healing slash that I received after falling off that rock at the beach, just before Joe saved my life. (How about truth or dare?) I shook my head. (You can't play that with only two people.) I told him. He smiled. (Says who?) he asked cocking his head to the side. (Says the world) I answered unconvincingly. (How about just truth then.) he said not giving up. (Fine.) I replied. He grinned at his victory. (I'll start.) He said racking his brain for a good question. (What do you worry about most?) he asked his eyebrows raised. (Pass.) I said flatly (Oh, come on!) he said, I could hear his smile. (Next question.) I told him shaking my head. He smiled at my stubbornness and continued on. (What would you do, if you could do anything?) he asked, his eyes searching mine intently. (I don't want to play this game.) I said shaking my head and leaning my back against the wall. He stared at me. He didn't look angry or annoyed, just thoughtful, as if he knew I wouldn't had answered in the first place, like he just wanted to throw the question out there for future references. A couple of the candles that had little wax in them from the start went out within the next ten minutes. Neither of us had said anything after I withdrew from the game, we listened to the silence that filled the house. Just then, an earsplitting crash of thunder erupted making both of us jump up in alarm. (What the hell!) I heard Joe shout. (It was just thunder.) I said, my voice shaking. I sat back down, waiting for him to sit down next to me. But he didn't, instead he walked over to the window and stared outside. (Where's your contract?) he asked walking back towards me after a moment. (Downstairs.) I answered standing up so I was closer to his level. (Do you want me to get it? We can read through it.) He asked. I liked the way he was so willing to help me, if it weren't for him I probably would never had gotten the opportunity. (I'll go get it, you won't be able to find it, and thank you.) I said brushing my hand against his shoulder. I saw him smile faintly, as I raced down the stairs. The rain had calmed down a bit, so it was barely drizzling outside. When I found the table in the dining room, it wasn't too difficult to find the papers perched against a chair that had been knocked against the table. I began to get a sick feeling in my chest and my heart began to pound painfully. I looked around, the window to my left allowed me to see that my mother's china cabinet was open, the dishes were scattered around it, along with other valuable objects that normally were in the family room or living room. I saw something at the corner of my eye and turned quickly to see a tall figure standing in the kitchen doorway that I knew wasn't
Joe, I had never screamed so loud in my life.
