Thanks, your engine must have had really good pointer management then, mine only makes it to around 1.5k. (It's about time I rewrote it:P)

Nice game so far, the shmup game made with SFML(in my profile)
is not as bullet intensive. :P. You should know that SFML uses opengl immediate mode for drawing sprites... since you will mostly be drawing bullets, you might want to edit the sf::sprite class to add display lists for bullets to give you a speed boost!

Yes, that was my first thought. My tests indicate that the engine can render around 10 000 moving sprites with nearly no fps loss, so I don't think that's necessary.
Your game is pretty sweet too.

I think I see how the sequencing works...
Red bullet upon an alarm turns into the purple bullet.
The emitter creates other objects identified as an attractor for the purple bullets. The purple bullets have a gravity toward the attractors and a low friction. Makes for a very interesting bullet formation.
