You could recieve rune drops from crackers and people with rune had lots of respect. A rune piece of armor could be valued up to 50m + before someone had gotten 99 smithing.

Believe it or not, they were worth nothing for a few months after release, and yes, they were 500k for a long time because, as I said, 1m was a basically unreal number in 2001. You'd really have to have played back then to understand how vastly different the economy was.
