Adam Lambert: "I am Gay and Proud of it"

After months of speculation, rumors and suggestive photos, it's finally official: 'American Idol' runner-up Adam Lambert is coming out, telling Rolling Stone magazine that he's gay and proud of it.
Even Lambert himself says that his admission probably won't come as a shocker to many who have followed his rise to fame. "I don't think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear that I'm gay," he tells Rolling Stone in their exclusive reveal.

I'm not sure I understand the part where someone would say, "I'm gay and I'm proud". I'm straight and I'm not proud/or ashamed, I'm just who I am. It's kind of like saying, I have brown eyes and I'm proud of it. It's just a part of who you are. People should be "proud" of accomplishments, and simply how we treat each other as human beings. I don't understand how a person is proud of their sexuality, it almost sounds as if the made a choice, when I know that's not really the case.
