Dream's Tutorial on making Xat icons using GIMP

Step 1
Make a 30 pixel by 30 pixel canvas, right click, go down to Colors, press color to alpha,

Step 2
Copy your sprite in and position it where the face and some smaller details are seen, the 7 lowest pixels will not be visible

Step 3
Begin to make your text starting 1 pixel from left and bottom, allowing your letters to reach a maximum of 5 pixels tall and 5 pixels wide.

Step 4
Add a border to the pixels surrounding the pixels making up the letters.
Leave the gaps where filling isn't needed.

Step 5
Save it as a .PNG file and upload to photobucket.
Use the URL to the icon as your "picture" and you're done!

=/ when i pasted breloom, the whole background became black

@NastyMutation That cold depend on your web brower, no problem though, the tool in the top right is the color picker, just select that, click anywhere on the black and rub it all out, see how that turns out. if it rubs out the outline of the sprite, try selecting the color and filling it in a completely different color, example, pink, then rub THAT out.

@DreamQuilava hmm ok i click on color picker but i dont get what it does, im clicking the black but its doing nothing and idk how to change color o-o

@NastyMutation Once you click it, it selects that which is the color you selected, when you use the rubber tool over it, it will rub out only the color you select, nothing else.

@NastyMutation umm ok more questions... srry when i click on it so i click on the black background then the rubber tool? whats the rubber tool cuz none of them says rubber tool

@NastyMutation Click the color selector, then click the black background this will select the black area. Then click the rubber, or eraser, the one with the icon that looks like an eraser. and just erase the whole thing.

Well I am a newb to gimp. When I saved the image, it didn't save as the tiny little head I was working on. What I was looking at in gimp was the size of an icon, but when it came out it was the whole body of the pokemon. confused...

Whenever I try and paste the icon thingy, the background just turns black. I see up there that someone had a similar problem and I tried doing what you told that person, but it didn't work out for me. Please help. :I

@NastyMutation Use the wand tool. Select the part you want transparent, and then right click, go to colors, then go to "color to alpha" and boom! transparent BG!

Oh, and the pokemon website says there's an error called "error 404" :(
