THIS IS MY FIRST EXPERMENT WITH COIVERTING AN ALREADY MADE EMPI SINGLE ZENITH INTAKE SYSTEM INTO A CROSS FIRE INTAKE ... SO FAR I HAVE HAD IT ON A DYNO AND IT MAKES 10% MORE HORSE POWER FIRST TIME OUT OF THE SHOOT.- AND THAT IS WITH THE SAME ZENITH CARB WITH NO JET CHANGES. THE FIRST TEST WAS WITH A EMPI TYPE MANIFOLD AND TUNED IT WOULD MAKE 67 HP @4500 WITH 113 POUNDS OF TORQUE.. THE CROSS FIRE MAKES 75 HP @4500 WITH 119 POUNDS OF TORQUE. WE ALSO KNOW THAT THERE ARE WELDING GOBBS INSIDE THE MANIFOLD - THE WELDER CLAIMS HE IS ONLY A BEGINER. SO I WILL LIVE WITH IT FOR A WHILE UNTIL I CAN CUT THE MANIFOLD BACK OPEN AND GRIND THE SMEGMA BACK TO LOOKING LIKE A PIPE AGAIN...IT STARTS INSTANTLY AND TONS OF TORQUE FROM THE GIT GO... IT ALSO REVS UP WAY FASTER THEN THE EMPI INTAKE...AS FAST AS YOU CAN PRESS ON THE GO STICK IS AS FAST AS THE REVS ARE THERE . YOU CAN PLAY BOTH VIDEOS AND HEAR THE DIFFERENCE .ITS CRAZY - I STILL AM AMAZED .. THE NEXT TEST IS WITH ADRIANS VERSION FROM ALL NEW FROM SCRATCH AND ANOTHER TEST WITH A WEBER AND DELORTO DOWNDRAFT.
Your idea is sound as this manifold better suits the VW firing order; however, the 24mm venturis in a Zenith are way too small for that engine with that manifold. Just swapping in a simple plenum manifold would unlock at least another 20hp if only because each cylinder would benefit from the flow provided by both venturis and not just one. Two 24mm venturis have 900mm surface area, or roughly the area of a single choke in a 34mm in a 40mm Weber or Dellorto. Try it out if you haven't already.
