Indian minster labelled as pro pakistani when trying to expose the real truth of mumbai drama

The killing of the chief of the local Anti-Terrorist Squad in the attacks in Mumbai is being felt especially hard by Indias Muslims and human rights campaigners who believe the officers death will deal a blow to the investigation into the Hindutwa terrorism network that had been allegedly targeting Muslims for years.

As the chief of the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of Maharashtra state, of which Mumbai is the capital, Hemant Karkare was leading the investigation that marked the first official confirmation of a Hindu terrorist cell in the country.

On Nov 26 during the first wave of the Mumbai attacks, Mr Karkare was among three senior officers killed by the terrorists, police reported.

In October and November ATS had arrested 10 Hindu activists, including a lieutenant-colonel in the Indian army, a Hindu nun and a monk, suspected of being involved in a bomb attack on Sept 29 that killed nine Muslims in the Maharashtra textile town of Malegaon.

Hindu political parties have alleged that the Hindu activists were arrested on fabricated charges in a political conspiracy by Congress, which heads the ruling federal alliance and also rules in Maharashtra. But Mr Karkare had told his superiors a few days before his death that he had enough evidence to prove that the arrested Hindu activists were indeed behind the bombing in Malegaon.

It has also been reported that Mr Karkare in the course of the Malegaon bombing investigation uncovered a larger Hindu terrorism network that in the past five years had possibly bombed more Muslim targets, including three mosques and the India-Pakistan friendship train Samjhauta Express in which 68 Pakistani tourists were killed last here.

Muslims across the country worry that with the loss of Mr Karkare, the investigation could be derailed in the face of pressure from powerful Hindu parties.
For years, we knew that Hindu terrorists were in action and they were targeting Muslims, said Aziz Mubaraki, an influential senior cleric in Calcutta.

But communally biased police always blamed the attacks on Muslims even in cases where mosques had been targeted. Karkare, despite being a Hindu, exposed the Hindu terrorism network, by leading ATS investigation in the fairest way.

We knew that this upright and bold officer would get Muslims justice by taking action against the Hindu terrorists what we were denied by many officers in the past. We are not sure now that [in the absence of Mr Karkare] if we can really get an officer of the same integrity to head this investigation.

Syed Mohammad Noorur Rahman Barkati, another popular cleric, said Mr Karkare was a gem of an officer and known for his fight for truth and justice.
He fought terrorists irrespective of their communal identity. Muslims of India are mourning his death and we are keeping him in our prayers.

After Mr Karkare was killed, Hindu leaders who had been demanding his ouster saying he was planting false cases just to please the ruling Congress party called him a martyr. The BJP leader and Gujarat chief minister, Narendra Modi, visited the dead officers widow offering 10 million rupees in honour money, which was promptly refused. Mrs Karkare said she would not let the party gain any political mileage using her husbands death.

Shabnam Hashmi, a human rights campaigner in New Delhi, has added her voice to those who think Mr Karkares death could slow down or even derail the investigation into Malegaon bombing.

From 2006, we had been giving evidence of Hindu groups being involved in terrorist activities, but government agencies ignored our points. But Mr Karkare is the first such senior police officer who ignoring pressure from powerful Hindu quarters took the cudgel to expose the infiltration of armys higher echelon by the Hindu militants, she said. The Malegaon investigation is facing the threat of being botched [in the absence of Mr Karkare].

A N Roy, the Maharashtra police chief, said Mr Karkare had already done the groundwork and the investigation in Malegaon bombing would meet a just conclusion.
