Generally understood to have been Norman, though some may say they are from long before, these earthworks are on the Fosse Way, the Roman road. In my work distributed in the area I have explained how Coventry developed in connection with the Roman fort that was here. A Roman tile with Civitatis Corieltauvorum on it was found at Churchover, not far away in Warwickshire. Corieltauvorum seems to have become Coventry as Bannavem Taberniae became Daventry. Each developed because of the Roman fort on the main road, which protected the estates nearby on more fertile ground.

  • Thank you for showing such a beautiful place!

Is the lovely sound a church bell?

  • @Mihorin51 Yes. Four bells, I think, rung in different sequences which the bellringers work through in what is called 'ringing the changes'.
