All great art--Shakespeare's, for example--produces in the spectator a cathartic moment, or Joycean "epiphany" in which he/she see him or herself in relation to the social fabric and the grand design. It's not about self-esteem but the opposite--the exposing of hubris and its lethal effect. It's not about ghettoizing people into a support group, but the opposite. We are all flawed, incomplete beings, but nothing is as empowering as knowledge that liberates us from our own delusions of grandeur.

The blues says as much without the patronizing, didactic representation of black women as a homogenous group of sisters with only color to deal with in life. Perry has not only tapped a nerve: he's created it, in the process reducing complex women to mere avatars of blackness. Like his other films, this one will give its fans temporary feel-good vibes, but it's a long way to Harvard and succeeding in a challenging career. Maybe they all can become directors of their own race flicks.

@yinkusminkus OMG!! it's like you read my mind!! I couldnt agree with you more. On every single youtube video people will be arguing for the most trivial reason. Especially over things that have NOTHING to do with the video. SMH....

@bigbadmoffo Maybe you should have seen the movie. This movie was about issues black women still face today not in the past. Lord forbid black women have anything and whites, latins, and asians cant handle it. Maybe YOU guys need to get over it.
I'm black young woman, and some of the issues in this movie have applied to me & lots of the women in my life (black and white). But i'm so appalled by the amount of hate and division generated by a TRAILER. Women vs Men, Women vs. Women, White vs. Black, Awards vs. No Awards.
WHY DOES IT MATTER?? Gosh people must we ALWAYS fight each other?!?! Sometimes there's wisdom, love and purity in just agreeing to disagree. We don't always have to make WAR esp. over a film depicting such raw realities.
