How do we talk about art? Silja Rantanen 1

Silja Rantanen (b. 1955) is a visual artist and Professor of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki. She became known at the start of the 1980s for her conceptual paintings depicting architectonic space. In 1986, her works were shown in the Nordic Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. In 1993, she was Helsinki Festival Artist of the Year. Apart from Kunsthalle Helsinki, her retrospective Artist of the Year exhibition was shown at Galleri F15 in Norway and at Lunds Konsthall in Sweden in 1994. In 1995, a series of twenty paintings Kaikki on yhdenmuotoista (All things are congruent), which Rantanen made on a commission for Norway, was shown at Pori Art Museum, at the Municipal Museum in Abteiberg in Germany, and at the Russian Museum in St Petersburg. In 1999, an exhibition of her works was shown at Göteborgs Konstmuseum in Sweden.

Rantanen has received the Edstrand Foundation Art Prize (1994), the Ars Fennica Award (1996) and Second Prize in the Carnegie Art Award (1999). Her most important public work is the façade of Arlanda airport air-traffic control tower from 2001. From the year 2000 until 2005, she worked as a Artist Professor. She was awarded the Pro Finlandia medal in 2005. The Sara Hildén Art Museum in Tampere is currently preparing for a retrospective exhibition of Rantanen´s art, which will open in autumn 2011.
