Spain's Basque separatists ETA announce ceasefire

http://timesofearth.com/Worldnews/?NT=0&nid=26959 Madrid, Spain (TOE) - ETA, the Basque separatist group, has declared a ceasefire after several months in which political parties close to ETA have been calling on it to renounce violence.

In a video statement published on Sunday by the Gara newspaper website, which typically publishes information from the group, ETA "calls on the Spanish government to implement the minimum democratic solutions toward a peace process."

The group also stated that it had considered undertaking this action for several months, but what it did not reveal was whether this decision would mean a permanent or temporary cease fire, and the statement added When the rights of the Basque people are recognised and guaranteed will be the time that the door will open to a real solution to the conflict.

In the video, three hooded ETA fighters are shown sitting behind a desk with the Eta flag pinned up behind them.

Previously the Spanish government said it would only negotiate with ETA if it ended its campaign of violence.

A few months ago ETA decided against carrying out further armed offensives.

The Spanish government, meanwhile, has rejected the announcement.
For Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, ETA's announcement - which failed to indicate whether it was permanent or temporary - was "very little," according to government sources.

Spanish governments have made several failed attempts over the past four decades to negotiate with ETA, which has declared 11 ceasefires since 1981.

ETA declared a unilateral ceasefire in March 2006, raising hopes for an end to the violence. But an ETA bombing at Madrid's Barajas airport in December 2006 that killed two men put an end to tentative peace talks with the government.

The Basque separatist group ETA is blamed for over 825 deaths in its long fight for Basque independence in an area straddling southwestern France and northeastern Spain.

ETA is considered a terrorist organisation by the European Union and the US.
