driving home from the 2011 smart car rally in wisconsin dells back home to woodridge, illinois. using my newest camera, a JVC Everio with it's "time lapse" function. i drove 180 miles home, non-stop in my smart fortwo, in the "slow lane" (57mph in the 65mph zones and 52mph in the 55mph zones) filmed at 1 frame per second, and played back at 30 frames per second, giving a "virtual speed" of 1710 mph, 3 times faster than a commercial jet, while driving on the ground, in a smart fortwo, and getting over 50 miles per gallon for the trip! it's one wild ride! i started in Viking Express Market parking lot (where i bought a diet coke for the ride) that was next to my motel, the Thunderbird Motor Inn in Baraboo, Wi and stopping in my home parking lot, 180 miles and 3-1/2 hours later, through the art of "time lapse photography" i compressed the trip to 7 minutes. Music is by my youtube friend Eddie629 (http://www.youtube.com/user/Eddie629) he covers a lot of "Who" stuff.

i'd also like to thank steven @ www.smartieparts.com for installing the cruise control in my smart, making this trip "painless", controlling a car for 3+ hours non-stop can cause some pain, mainly ankle and butt! the cruise control just let me sit back and enjoy the ride!

for the highway footage, i'm covering a mile in a little over 2 seconds...flying!

the smart fortwo is EPA rated at 33mpg city and 41mpg highway. my first tank, in the dead of winter was 37mpgs and it never went below that, my best was 61.6mpgs with some "drafting". i did no drafting in this video, this is a 100% mileage video, i only stopped 3 times in the whole 180 miles, leaving the parking lot, getting off the tollway at my hometown and at the next light. an exceptionally lucky "run".

  • @Neonspinnazz30 if i hired a semi to drive 55mph and lock that, i could do an easy 100mpgs for any distance, why hasn't smart thought of that?

  • @mrbadx19 From 41mpg to 100mpg...these cars are quite impressive.

  • @Neonspinnazz30 actually, drafting i could get over 100mpgs, i've done it on runs to indiana for powerball tix, you can see it instantly on the scan gauge.

  • @mrbadx19 That's very impressive...however I bet if you tailgated a semi (although not recommended) I bet you could've broke 60mpg.

  • @rek636 when i'm doing 85mph and passing everyone is funny too, looks like this too, 'cept i'm the one in the fast lane, and i drop to 40mpgs. i'm in it for fun, i bought the car in '07, before gas prices were an issue. i like this car, getting 50+mpgs is just a bonus now!

  • @rek636 i was doing 57mph in a 65mph zone, they were getting probably 8-20mpgs in their hogs, i got over 50mpgs on this trip, i just hadda watch my rear view mirror so one of them didn't hit me, my foot was hovering over the gas and i always kept an eye on the mirror. i wasn't in a rush, i knew i'd be home around noon. the speed limit was 65mph, it wasn't a minimum, at times i've done 85mph in a 55mph zone, when i'm late for something, i planned this trip in advance, no rush!

  • Everybody is just passing your ass.
