Albert RoSewig was a German imiigrant to Philadelphia in the mid 1800s. For over 30 years he was the director of music at St. Charles Borromeo Church. He owned a publishing company that produced, among other things, an important collection of sacred music including his own. His style is comparable to the genius of Gounod, Verdi, and Mozart and he made known in America some of the richest music ever written for the Church.

This piece is rarely performed and I personally think of it as a lost treasure. When Pius X sought to restore Gregorian chant to it's rightful and proper place in the Liturgy there was a rather fanatical approach by some ....reminiscent of the radical foolishness of the 60s, that all but erased much of the romantic yet quite prayerful music from our churches. I hope a new generation will discover this era in music history

  • Thank you for posting this one. I used to sing it at Weddings, many years ago.

A treat to hear it again. Do you know the artist???

  • Yes this lovely version is rather forgotten these days. The vocalist is a very talented oraganist, singer, and also a music director at one of the Catholic churches here in Dayton. I was very pleased to have the opportunity to accompany her on this piece
