This video shows the use of the submental island flap for the reconstruction of a large oral cavity defect. This flap is easily incorporated into cases requiring a neck dissection. The flap as shown is easily elevated & quite versatile.

  • I think its great that your Teaching Hospitals offer life to these patients who may not otherwise be able to afford it.I bet the waiting list is huge.

  • @tempting54 actually, there isn't any waiting list for surgery here. The time from diagnosis to operating room is about 10 days to 2 weeks. This time is ultimately dependent upon the patient's comorbidities & medical clearance for the surgery. The entire work-up of the patient, including scans & biopsies, takes about 1 week.

  • @tempting54 Thank you for your kind comments concerning the videos. I'm glad that you find them useful.

  • I'm just curious,

does it require the consent of the patient to be allowed to film the procedure in this manner?

Is this a free clinic where patients have to consent to i.a. medical student training and surgical documentation in order for the surgery to be free?

Please excuse my ignorance about the health care system in USA, I'm from Norway.

  • Consent is required for everything in this country; i.e., surgery, photography, videos, etc.

These cases are done in large teaching hospitals where it is understood that there are resident doctors assisting & doing parts of these cases under close supervision. There is no charge to the patients for the surgeries performed.

  • Sometimes, that is a real problem, which has to be dealt with. In this case, the patient had very little hair in the area of the flap.
