Large Tar Balls Arrive on Florida's East Coast; Biologist asks if from BP Oil Spill

The tar balls range in size from 3 inches up to 7 inches and were among more than 50 others found recently along this protected beach.

A Local Marine Biologist at the Florida Oceanographic Center in Stuart said it is rare for tar balls to come ashore around this area.

The beach is a designated wildlife refuge, home to rare nesting birds and turtles.

A spokeswoman for the Coast Guards Miami office said, "We don't know why they are showing up."

@landofthemarvelous You do realize that tar balls wash ashore every year. Tar balls been washing ashore since dawn of US History some 500 years ago. People should be more afraid of actual oil than tar balls.

Tar balls have been hitting the shores of the Persian Gulf for 30,000 years.
