There seems to be a lot of confusion on here about the recording quality. Yes, it is obviously recorded outside of a well treated room onto either 1/4" tape or cassette multi-track with cheap gear. All of the elephant 6 collective releases from the early/mid 90's were recorded the same way.

It wasn't intentional, it was simply the means. The acoustic guitar and bagpipes, and most else being driven into distortion: yes, of course.
