Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky, Pål Eide - piano, from the concert programme "Piano Pictures" (Check out his new cd with Bach and Rachmaninov at Amazon.com). Richter called Pictures at an Exhibition "the greatest russian work for piano".

Content Part 1:
- Promenade I
- Gnomus (The Gnome)
- Promenade II
- Il Vecchio Castello (The Old Castle)

Mussorgsky was inspired to write his masterpiece at an posthumous exhibition of paintings and drawings by the architect and illustrator (who had been Mussogsky´s friend), Victor Hartmann. The music describes the pictures and the composers state of mind as he is walking between the pictures...

  • It is the wee hours of the morning and I desired to listen to the Mussorgsky "Pictures", piano version. I chose this artiste's performance. How wonderful! His interpretation is what I feel Mussorgsky would have played for his peers. Articulation, nuance, his singing out the subtle inner melody in the bass whilst the primary melody rings true in the treble is awesome. His understanding of the composition usually comes to a concert pianist later in life. I'd love to hear him in person in Texas!

  • @music784151 Thank you for that! I´ll love to come to Texas and play it!

  • This is truly an awe inspiring performance. I am no big fan of classical music but I must have listened to your rendition of this piece at least 10 times! Thank you so much for posting this. It is really amazing.

  • @TheSupnickmon: Thank you so much for that! If you have listened 10 times than you are already a hardcore classical music fan ;-)

  • I agree with Richter, but I feel that Rachmaninoff's 1st piano sonata is up there, too. Beautiful! This will be an upcoming project for me. Isn't this piece wonderful? It's a revelation.
