  • this is the birthplace of Butoh ... Hijikata, the co-founder, is "dancing" to the internal imagery/memory of his beloved sister who was sold to prostitution at a young age, and was most likely dead when this dance was performed. Ankoku Butoh means the Dance of the Dark Soul.

  • @carlosesparza87 hmm that's certainly different. Thanks!

  • @jouningirl Well, butoh's origins relay on a response to japan's contemporary scene back in the early 70s, which was considered superficial and utterly shallow by the first choreographers of this kind of piece. It's supposed to evoke movement and flow coming from the uncontrollable within or in the outside, both emotional and environmental factors leading to spontaneous movement. I don't think butoh itends to tell a story or inspire emotion, but to expose the true nature of the concept.

  • I think this is interesting...but I'm not sure what to make of it..is this depicting a storyline of sorts, or is it trying more to evoke some sort of emotional response?

  • precious document of Hijiikata. Thanks for posting!
