Elayne Harmer responds to Jerry McNerney's attacks against David's support for public schools

Hi, I'm Elayne Harmer. My husband, David Harmer is running for Congress in California's 11th district. I'm appalled at the negative attacks Jerry McNerney is throwing at David. They're absolutely lies.

One especially false claim is that David wants to abolish the public school system. Nothing could be further from the truth. I'm a substitute teacher in our public schools. Each of our 4 children has attended public schools since they were in kindergarten, and David is in his 3rd year as a local officer in the Windemere Ranch Middle School Education Fund. They've worked really hard to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to reduce class sizes and to provide new technology in the classroom.

David believes as I do that schools should be run at a local level. State and Federal government should step aside and let local school boards, parents, and teachers make the decisions that affect our children.

I'm so disappointed that Jerry McNerney has twisted David's good work in educational reform and is using it to attack David. David is completely dedicated to great education and he fully supports the public school system.

Your husband published a piece in the SF Chronicle, entitled, "ABOLISH THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS", on 8/27/2000, did he not?

This issue is arguable, but denying that he is/was of this opinion is a flat out, bald-faced LIE.

Also, it's stunning that your husband couldn't beat the awful & unknown Democrat candidate, Jerry McNerney, in a district that is center-right at worst. We deserved a far better candidate. Being a politician is bad enough, but a multiply FAILED politician, that's pathetic!

Guess who wrote the headline? The oh-so-unbiased San Francisco Chronicle. And, by the way, the Chronicle had already decided on that headline before they asked David to write the article. David never wrote he wanted to abolish public education, nor does he think it. He's for great education, by whomever provided. And no, you don't have to care what I say, but I do think I'm uniquely qualified to speak, as a public school teacher and the mother of David's four public-school-educated kids.

@msegal27 you have major issues attacking his wife!.... Her opinion matters since she is his wife and knows him better than anybody and is a substitute teacher. And your be a man comment? McNerny hides behinds his goons and his campaign spouts out lies about David Harmer on a daily basis! Seems like McNerny is scared if he's using cheap shots like this...
