I uploaded a video from my own wedding last night, and this morning on YouTube there was a notice against it in My Videos stating that it may violate somebody's copyright. I successfully disputed this claim, which had been made by "Music Publishing Rights Collecting Society".

Is "Music Publishing Rights Collecting Society" a bogus organisation that has been set up to make money from YouTube by searching for audio tracks and filing a large number of speculative copyright disputes? The notice I received on YouTube stated that ads would be displayed on the video as a result, therefore presumably MPRCS is earning money from these claims. A web search for this organisation reveals that numerous other people have had a similar experience of a unfounded copyright claims by MPRCS.

Is MPRCS a legitimate organisation? I cannot find any website for them. I don't believe they are affiliated with the Performing Rights Society, despite the very similar name.

(Surely, no such "Society" would have "Collecting" in their name, since revenue collection would only ever be part of the remit of the organisation.)

I have submitted a question about this matter in the Help Forum:
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/youtube/thread?tid=45b57ad9def857ad&...

Note: the content subject to the copyright claim was my wedding video, in which the congregation sang the hymn "Praise My Soul the King of Heaven" (lyrics 1834, music 1869). This material is not copyrighted. If an automatic search matched it to a recording of the hymn, then surely the search process is too unreliable not sufficiently stringent.

  • @Otouto72 & @KrispyApplez:

Yeah, that's just ridiculous. The music company needs to get over themselves. It's people's right on what they want to do with their videos.

  • I got one of these literally 10 minutes after uploading my last track! Unbelievable... I own the copyright to ALL my music. It makes me mad that some asshole is doing this.

  • I got a similar notification for a couple of makeup tutorials that have no music in them whatsoever. its SO ridiculous

  • They did with my picture still of "I Want To" by Cheyenne Kimball! Geez, I was just wanting to show people on another website that song! It's not like there was any other way to put a video on there!

  • whats the e-mail address that u recieved the e-mail from please tell me

  • As bad as Viacom is on this..what about Disney and TimeWarner..they're just as bad on this,.,..

  • When I added "Beethoven Sonata" and "Creative Commons License" in the description box the "notification" disappeared.

  • Beware with EMI Music, EMI currently had done copyright claims for the Beatles songs and more EMI songs.

  • @attovishnu Are you a registered member of the MCPS? Dispute the clain saying it is your own music and then register with the MCPS, I think it cost £50 and you get royalties every time your song is used.
