Another take on the concept of a mineral oil submerged computer. Everything in the tank is completely submerged in oil, and runs anywhere from 31 to 33 degrees Celsius at peak operating temperatures.

  • so, should i remove any of the fans if i was going to do this?

and could u post a video of the temperatures?

  • chilean03n is correct about the fans, at least in the context of using low viscosity oil like I did. In fact, I recently removed my hardware from the oil case for the purposes of moving, and the fans still air-cool sufficiently. However, due to this, I'm unable to record any new video of the oil case, as it is currently unused.

  • One thing to keep in mind, however, is that oil will cause plastics and rubbers to harden over time. If you have plastic feet on the fan/heatsink you are using, such as the units that come with Core 2 and Core i processors, the feet may not bend as intended in the process of removing/mounting it on the motherboard.

If you aren't planning on removing the CPU, this should matter to you, but it may be something to consider if you want to upgrade your motherboard or such at some point.

  • @Killerwalrus234 if im not mistaken i believe you have a run on sentense. look whos calling the kettle black....

  • @ins3 It's you're you fucking idiot, if you are going to accuse someone of being retarded maybe you should learn to spell.

  • i have a question. how does the oil effect the rubber that holds the glass together?

  • Ok, very nice but what is that song playing on the movie? :-))

  • your retarded

  • Sorry for the slow response, I just got done moving; While wicking will always occur, it's not enough to damage a drive. You should be able to leave your HDD plugged in indefinitely without ever running into trouble; the oil will simply present a clean-up issue, so make sure you're not running it over a nice carpet.

That said, there are some people who claim that even if you submerge your drive it won't be harmed, but I do not trust hearsay enough to risk destroying my drives testing it.

  • you do not have to remove any of the fans. they will run a bit slower, but will not burn out
