How will the therapies of the future look like? Research relating to embryonic stem cells will certainly play a role - even after the European Court of Justice ruled against the patentability of these therapies. For too many diseases, scientists are convinced of a real chance of recovery - such as with the Parkinson or Alzheimer disease. Of course other therapeutic methods are being researched - an alternative to stem cell procedures concerning some malfunctions in the brain, is the so-called neuromodulation, for example with Parkinson's disease or also for some forms of tinnitus. Here the function of the affected cell groups are modulated with the help of minor electrical currents, positively influencing them. And this works without surgery, as a team of researchers from Jülich and Cologne prove.
