A Spanair flight bound for Las Palmas crashed on take off at Madrid's airport. Although the Spanish government claims forty five casualties, an emergency services source has reported about 150 fatalities. Here is more on this tragic accident.
STORY:
A thick plume of smoke billows from a runway at Madrid Airport. It's coming from what's left of Spanair flight JK5022.
The MD82 jet - similar to this one - was bound for Las Palmas in the Canary Islands when it crashed on take off.
164 passengers and nine crew were on board.
More than 20 ambulances and numerous fire engines were on the seen soon after the crash.
An early government statement said that at least 45 people were killed and 19 seriously injured. One emergency services spokesman said the number of dead was much higher. He said there were just 25 survivors.
[Spokesperson, Emergency Services]:
"They are pulling out burnt corpses...the plane has been destroyed."
Dozens of shocked relatives have been arriving at Las Palmas airport on Gran Canaria.
Many had been expecting to pick up loved ones. Instead they were greeted by Red Cross psychiatrists offering grief counseling.
