David Watkins http://www.davidwatkins.info is one of those musicians who is infectiously enthusiastic about his instrument. Here he is telling us about the Russian School of playing with the fist where the whole hand goes back behind the thumb, bringing the sound more to life; his "velcro technique" for 18th century music; and his unique way of getting the harp to sing with a bit of vibrato, perhaps sounding a little more like a lute or guitar. This is achieved with a twisting motion of the forearm, encouraging the string to spin in a circle.

David is here playing the Nocturne in E flat by Mikhail Glinka.

It is such a privilege to find oneself being shown inside secrets of musicianship and often in arranging concerts at Hammerwood Park http://www.hammerwood.mistral.co.uk/c... I find a musician who ought to be interviewed by Radio 3 In Tune programme . . . and wish that I had my camera or recorder. This time, whilst setting up for the concert after lunch, the camera was here . . .

Of course automatic volume control on the camera microphone makes the differences hard to hear . . . so you really need to come to a masterclass in real life! So perhaps, if you hear that David is doing a masterclass . . . it's worth moving heaven and earth to come and hear him.
