Speaking about plastic toxicity (when heated) how much more would cost a system made with scrap/recylced metal piping (or plumbing plastic) painted black?
@Shannariano All metals leach trace amounts of lead, zinc and iron, even copper. There are several reasons not to drink tap water or shower water regardless of the heat source or plumbing source. The only truly safe water for drinking is steam distilled and reverse osmosis (safe, mineral OVER leaching, MYTH, not true, unless you are dehydrated or facing famine, extreme fast developed world diet, not possible). Truly pure water is hard to find. Copper is a good choice but expensive.
@smogharbel Polytube does not leach below 150 f. Even trace amounts are not bad if you do not drink. Most residential electric heaters have plastic components in contact water. Also shower heads and other plumbing is contacted at some point. City water and well water all contain plastic and metal leached stuff. Your skin is pretty tough at keeping most out. Drinking one bottled water is 3x exposure of weeks of a shower. Never drink tap water Steamy showers not healthy regardless of heater.
I understand that these kind of heaters can get the water up to about 100 degrees. Kind of limited there because it turns into steam at that point, unless you pressurize it, in which case it'll go up 180 degrees C. How hot did you say you wanted your shower?
So realistically you want 20 gallons of solar heated water plus 40 gallons to cool it down to a usable temperature if you're doing it direct.
What if you had a circulating pump on the cold side pumping thru the hose going back to the Hot side of the Water tank, put it on a timer and set it to turn off at night and back on during sunlight time? What are you thoughts on that Dan?....Would the pump still pump under the pressure of the incoming cold water in the Tank? Maybe use a Solar Powered Pump?
