Chengdu Earthquake Moment of "Silence" in Beijing

Well, a moment of silence might be a misnomer. At 2:28pm, in remembrance of the earthquake victims, there was a 3 minute "honking" by all nearby cars to sympolize the wailing & grieving for the victims.

Many employees at Tsinghua Science Park all gathered to commemorate the tragedy while flags flew at half mast.

Previously known mostly for congestion & pollution, all the cars in Beijing contributed to poignant moment of seriousness.

This was taken at outside of Tsinghua Science Park near Wudaokou, Tsinghua & Peking University

Hello, in many ancient traditions, including Chinese, funeral and memorial includes wailing, which is why the local population "gets it". In addition, 7 days after death, the spirit is believed to return to this world... They can see us, but we cannot see them. Public display of grief and respect are attempts to restore peace in mind.

Oh cool...thanks for the info eschenk3 and putting the ceremony in perspective. I don't think I've ever been to a traditional Chinese funeral before.

So amazing, everyone just... stopped.

Nothing like this would happen in the United States. People are too busy and wrapped up with themselves to see the world around them.

Someday, I hope to live in China. If there is ever peace.
