I strongly agree. Plus the ELCA is establishing full communion with so many denominations right now simply because not many people are going to seminary to be ELCA pastors. Alot of people would rather be clergy in other denominations than in the ELCA. Plus the ELCA is in no way culturally relevant. That is why many minorities are joining Baptist, Pentecostal, and Charismatic churches. They want to worship in a way that speaks to their relationship with God.

By the year 2045, if current trends continue, these people will have disappeared like the Shakers. But they are so ridiculous and boring that it's really no loss. And they're at their most tedious when pretending to be "relevant" and "prophetic".

@mrpsichi Well I guess the reason it is because the immigrant Lutherans in the 19th century did not stay in the Lutheran church of the European (Scandinavian, the situation in Germany was a bit different) and eventually be a part of that communion like the Episcopal church is a part of the Anglican Communion. A breach in tradition.

@karpov89 There are no Lutheran cathedrals in America. The office of bishop-ordinary (aka diocesan or prelate) is simply an administrative office in the ELCA so there is no need for a cathedral. Plus the ELCA is more democratic than episcopal in its form of church government

@mrpsichi I wonder, are there not any Lutheran cathedrals in America?! As there are serveral bishops there should be several bishops (only one per diocese, although if there is an archbishop there is also a bishop in the archdiocese), and for each diocese a cathedral (although some dioceses for historical reasons may have more than one cathedral. So it is in the Scandinavian countries.

@karpov89 I doubt it. The sad thing is that all of the Lutheran bishops that were not consecrated when the Episcopal Church entered into full communion with ELCA were "grandfathered" into apostolic succession. That's not good. They should have recieved the rite of succession. Plus according to tradition in order for one's credentials to be valid he must be a bishop in possession of succession and so must his consecrators.

@karpov89 If you search for Biskopsvigning here on Youtube you will find videos on a real bishop ordination from the magnificient Cathedral of Uppsala, Sweden, where two new bishops of the Church of Sweden were consecrated.

@mrpsichi And the consecrating bishops must have the apostolic succession, but I am not sure those others are consecrated by Episcopalian bishops.

@karpov89 True there should be at least three bishops. One would serve as the chief-consecrator and the other two would be co-consecrators. It is obvious that His Eminence, The Most Rev. Mark Hanson (primate of the ELCA) was the chief-consecrator. I'm assuming that the bishop who gave the candidate the crosier (staff) and the other bishop that gave the candidate the ring were the co-consecrators. I could be wrong but I'm assuming.

@mrpsichi Well all that insignia is not tradition of the Lutheran bishops but here something is missing..there should also be a minimum of three bishop consecrating the new bishop according to old traditions.
