Thank you for your interest. When correctly tuned there should be only one tone. But it is possible to get different timbres.

a) Hitting on the edge (pointed ) produces more tonal sound.

b) Hitting on the right edge so the drum stick form a chord to drum head (more stick length for this oblique stroke) gives tonal loud sound with a different texture.

c) Hitting on the centre produces loudest not so tonal sound with some noise and different timbre. A and B are used often. See next

Stroke A is the major difference between closed rim Chenda of Kerala and Open rim Chande of Yakshagana. Yakshagana Chande can produce more tonal sound using stroke A.
