A BRITISH CYCLEMASTER PIATTI SCOOTER FROM 1957.

Designed by an Italian and first built in Belgium in the mid 1950s and then later in the UK. The prototype had its headlamp where the air intake is now. The engine must have got very hot! Single seat versions were also advertised at an even cheaper price without a spare wheel which made it at one time the cheapest scooter available on the UK market. To work on the engine you laid the scooter on its side after closing a valve on the filler cap.

As i was cleaning the scooter three separate passers by came over and asked questions about it so i thought it may be an idea to make a descriptive video about it. As i was in the middle of doing that, another passer by came over and made enquiries so I kept the video running to record what was said. It does include some talk of other restoration matters but i thought the whole conversation was interesting enough to retain it all un edited!

  • @poelieweimaraner Pease let us see you scooters. I still love all the makes but sadly we were faced with a huge legal bill some time ago which meant all but the Piatti had to be sold. See more about that and some of the scooters I owned in my video CLASSIC MOTOR SCOOTERS. I have other scooter videos on youtube too. Yes I am on Facebook but havent done much with that!

  • @ADMIRALSCORNER Thanks for your reply. It sure interests me, the only problem is I have only the Belgian list to compare chassis numbers, so numbers on an English piatti I cannot "interprete". What about coming over next summmer on your "oscar" to join the Toys of the Fifties?

Are you on facebook? Otherwise I can show you my modest collection of scooters (4).

A friend of our organizing committee is an avid collector (over 95 scooters) whoose collection will certainly interest you.

  • @poelieweimaraner Hi Nice to meet a fellow enthusiast! My Piatti was made in the UK after production ceased in Belgium' I will willingly send you the chassis number but if the register is for Belgian made scooters are you still interested? You can read about the diferences to the Belgian model in my Scooter and Microcar Book. See my home page for information on that, if that interests you.

  • Hello,

Piatti-lovers. I'm trying to manage a Piatti (D'Ieteren-Belgian) register; Can anyone owing a Piatti send me his chassis number. If you do so, I will send you information about the number your Piatti rolled of the band and (with your permission) include your proud ownership on the register wich I intend to publish in a book about 50's Belgian made scooters.

    Yours on smaller wheels,

    Poelieweimaraner

  • @sudiste59 Thats interesting. The grey Piattis were made in Belgium. I once visited what is left of the factory there and saw several with interesting accesories. Today they are collectors items!
