I hope this is not very painful for the crabs.

Stone crabs are the only crab species that can regenerate their claws in 1 to 3 years, if their not killing the crabs completely then this is proably one of the healthiest forms of fishing not that im some kind of tree hugger or anything

will this kill the crab?

The claws come off so easily for a reason. It's not really harmful to the crab, as the claws come off to enable easier escape from predators.
Removal of both claws is legal, as it's been shown that without the claws, they'll eat more vegetation, which is beneficial to the crab itself. Only takes about a year for them to grow back.
Popping those claws looks kind of fun too. :)
very cool, and a great idea! I would bet mortality is slightly higher for one clawed crabs due to predation...but its far better than harvesting the whole crab.

it's amazing how fast the claw grows back plus the large claw is somewhat of a deformity.. it's nature's finest, sweetest delicacy that requires no preservatives, etc. Truly one of the true treasures of life. Indulge and order online at Fresh Choice Seafood

Interesting, so just to be clear, the claw that we eat is just one from the stone crab not both, so this means we dont kill the crab just harvest 1 claw every year, is this accurate_

does it grow back?

Yes, stone crab claws grow back in approximately 1 year. Stone crabs even have an enternal mechanism that allows them to release the claw naturally. The stone crab does not need claw for survival, hence a renewable resource. Order online at fresh choice seafood!
