Polemics is a small company based in NYC that supports exchanges between artists of various disciplines from the south of Italy and the United States. We are currently in the final phases of completing a documentary film about hiphop in Naples, Italy entitled, Napolizm.
Alberto Polo Cretara of the Neapolitan hiphop group, La Famiglia, conceived of Napolizm, the documentary film as a way to look at the current difficulties faced by the ancient city of Napoli as the first decade in the new millennium comes to a close. Cretara began the project with a CD compilation called Napolizm Vol. 1 that was released in 2005 at the feast of San Gennaro, in NYC. The first project of its kind, Napolizm Vol. I documented the Neapolitan hip hop scene as it stood at that moment in time. By uniting many of Napolis diverse and dynamic artists on one compilation, Napolizm I gave a voice to an underground yearning for peaceful expression in a city plagued by corruption, violence and ignorance. It brought international attention to the sound of Napolis urban street culture and continues to be a testament to the importance of the city as an international centre of art and culture.
The compilation was enthusiastically received in the US by hip hop heads, scholars, artists and the Italian American community and has also received media attention in both the United States and Italy. Cretara has been a featured guest discussing Napolizm and hiphop in Italy on WBAI in NYC, Columbia Universitys WKCR, on internet radio and on many of Italys major networks including RAI. Although Napolizm Vol. I was never officially released in Italy it immediately became, and remains a favorite among bootleggers throughout the country. The project has since inspired other compilations celebrating the unique style of hip-hop realism that comes from artists hailing from the south.
In Spring 2007 in anticipation of Napolizm Vol.2 and the documentary film, the project was presented at the Biennale of Art in Venice in conjunction with MoMA PS1 of NYC. Napolizm Vol.2 and the film both take a fresh look at the scene two years later. Once again the project unifies the hip hop community of Napoli and its surrounding areas, giving a voice to the urban poets, musicians, producers and fans who detail the beauty, and complexity of life in the Neapolitan jungle.
