This song has such presence, for years humans have struggled with the addiction to painkillers..

@MsJCBurke I always liked this one too. I had non idea he even recorded this until I bought Troubadour.

Buffy st. Marie version is by far the best

Boss, thanx for this, never heard Donovan do it before. Always thought the song was by Buffy St. Marie, now I wonder if she just adopted it. Anyway, great version, love it, and now must look up who wrote it, so yeh

Donovan was not ripping off Dylan's style. Donovan was influenced by Nick Drake and Woody Guthrie. Donovan sounds a LOT more like Drake than he does like Dylan or Guthrie. If he ripped off anyone, it was Drake.
Dylan ripped off Guthrie in his early songs, and was obsessed with him.

The "Litter" does a good job on this song. I guess that you have to really try hard to mess up such a good song.

All the versions are good: B S-M's original, Charlatans (NON-UK), QMS, Deborah Kooperman, Joplin. No doubt Donovan is trying to sound like Mr. Zimmerman vocally here, but what's wrong with that?
@melora72 Nick Drake wasn't recording music until years after this...

I prefer this version to the rest, even Buffy Sainte-Marie's version (though if I'm not mistaken, she wrote it).
