U.Va. President Teresa Sullivan has named John Simon, Duke scientist and vice provost for academic affairs, the University's executive vice president and provost. Simon will start his new position September 1.

President Sullivan says in John Simon she feels U.Va. has found "the ideal partner to lead the University's highly ranked academic division." She credits the thoughtfulness and efficiency of the search committee for their work.

John Simon is a chemist. He holds degrees from Williams College and also from Harvard University. He chaired the chemistry department at Duke before becoming the university's vice provost for academic affairs six years ago.
