  • Thanks Uncle and I enjoy your videos as well. I am traveling in Spain and Portugal right now and will just quickly reply in English.

  • I mean that we are influenced by people around us who speak the language and I do not think it is useful to be too analytical. People can do what they want, but if I am asked, that is my answer.

  • Hello Steve,

I'm learning Japanese right now (living in Japan, currently) and while listening to this video I caught something interesting.

I had to replay a few times but I still hear you end a sentence with "わね" and I'm curious as to where in Japan you lived? Usually わ is used by females. However, I heard in some regions it's gender neutral. Just curious about that :)

  • If you are caught in this kind of detail your Japanese will never take off. Just speak the way you want.

  • @lingosteve im surprised,i thought Japanese was very very strict and careful on the use of these grammatical element (gender) ..of coruse i know im wrong,.but id like you to explain me of this a bit better

  • @awfulguitarplucker You will tend to imitate those people whom you want to imitate. This will usually ensure that you speak like people of the same sex as you. Nothing to worry about. It is more a matter of vocabulary and intonation, not grammar.

  • 関西に住んだことあるんですか?

  • Wow! I'm so jealous!! I so want to speak japanese like this!!!

  • Well, I don't speak for Steve here, but what I think he meant by the reply was just don't get caught up in small details. Just learn the language and everything will work itself out. I mean, I don't talk like either of my parents, but that's who I learned English from. I may have started out talking like them but as I grew up I formed my own way of speaking. I think that's what happens naturally.

But I also think fluency is know WHEN to use certain things so you don't sound foolish to others.

  • I friendly disagree with you here. Perhaps I prefer to speak in a certain way in japanese, women talk is forbidden.

It really hasn't anything to do with improving your skill whatsoever.

I don't think I'd like my 94 year old grandma calling my friends -hey yo nigga... actually in spanish -que onda wey!
