I graduated two years ago from The University of Texas at Austin with a broadcast journalism degree. For two years, I interned at prestigious stations including ABC, FOX and NPR. With a promising future, I never heard a call back from a single employer. I began to doubt my skills and my ability to do what I love to do -- report. Deep inside I had struggled with having a professional life with a scarf from the very beginning, but I took baby steps to remove any doubts. Unfortunately, by the time I did my times and had the ability to overcome insecurity in the work-field, reality eventually caught up with me. All my mentors, professors, and even reporters I worked with told me that I knew how to report, it was just that I would have to choose my scarf or my profession. I wondered and still wonder, am I not allowed to have both? How can wanting freedom of press rob you of your rights to practice freedom of religion. I decided I won't let this stop me, so I pulled together equipment and went out in the field on my own and began reporting. These days you can find me trying to look for in-depth stories where I can describe fascinating aspects of people's lives. Until, I get my FIRST call back from a news director, I'll be waiting to be hired by an American news agency.

InshaAllah, God is the one to give us Rizq and your reward is with him. I admire you for standing strong by your faith, and inshaAllah soon enough someone that admires the courage it takes to be yourself and not give in to social standards will give you the right position. I will keep you in my prayers.
