@taitai907 Jake brake is a mechanism on a truck engine (an additional part/modification). But on car or motorcycle, you are using a lower gear (within your standard transmission) to lower the speed despite the high engine rev.

YOU BUSTED MY SPEAKERS!!!! Hahaha lol

Obviously you love your Jake Brake, so tell Jacobs how much and win a racing weekend in Vegas! Just enter "Jacobs Tip to Vegas" in Facebook and tell your Jake Brake Story

@taitai907 diesels have special things that reduce their exhaust port holes size when you engage the jake brake (so ive heaard) and this causes the exhaust gases to be forced through a tinier hole causing more back pressure on the engine slowing it down and making it sound like its about to EXPLODE! :D

R.I.P. headphones users!

I have a small 98 Sonoma (manual) and my truck makes this sound when I downshift and stay off the gas and clutch. So I just thought that's what the big truck drivers did, too; I didn't know it was a whole system! Lol

BTW its called Engine brakes not jake brakes due to trademark name that your using from Jacbson Co.

@taitai907 the jake brake (or Jacobson Brake) opens the exhaust valves during the combustion cycle on a diesel engine, thats why they are so loud (usually) when they are enabled. you are literally hearing the explosion of the combustion that would normally be contained in the combustion chamber
-
@taitai907 engine brake is on big trucks. not cars. it helps to slow them down my openning up the exhaust valve and just letting the air go through instead of burning it and making more power
-
@taitai907 Jake brakes have a special cam and valve arrangement to change the timing of the compression cycle so the engine does the max amount of work in this mode. The compressed air coming out is allowed to expand quickly as part of the maximizing losses.
Why does engine braking make that sound on semi- trailers? I engine brake on cars but I never hear that sound.

@taitai907 Because you don't have a Jake on your car.
