Staggering Statistics

Prior to 1970, the incidence of autism in the US was approximately 1 child in 2000. By 1996, it was approximately 1 in 500. In 2000, the ratio had risen to 1 in 150 in some regions.

In California alone, there was a 238% increase in level one autism (which does not include Asperger's syndrome, PDD or other higher-functioning forms of autism spectrum disorders) between 1987 and 1998, compared with a 583% increase in the number of children diagnosed with level one autism from 1999-October 2001.

California is not alone in this epidemic. Nationwide, diagnosed cases of autism increased by 544% between 1992 and 2001.

These statistics do not include the millions of American children with ADHD.

  • I just met my nephew and he didn't recognize my family even though a year we haven't met but not his brothers. Last year he was quite closed to my dad but this year he didn't remember anything. Is that normal for the autism?

  • @Adde00001 it wouldnt be like that for the autism in my family, but maybe for others or something else going on you might want to ask a dr or therapist. good luck and blessings

  • i don't believe there is any particular look to autism, however many may be 'better looking' than the norm

  • 1 in 91? Where did that number come from? I know the Canadian Autism Association is saying 1 in 110, and the National Autistic Society of Britain is saying 1 in 100. I've never heard that number before, so I was just wondering who says that because I'd like to see that study because that's incredibly high. Thanks.

By the way, nice video. I agree it's a big deal... let's make this Autism Awareness Day count (April 2nd 2011)!! :)

  • You are so right they are beutiful but they don't look like they have autism at all they are that cute
