Spend 20 minutes balancing next to your kitchen counter, clipping in and out. If you fall thereafter, you're either riding crazy-rough terrain where you'd be falling *regardless* of the presence or absence of a retention system, or you're not paying enough attention to the road.

Try going through a rock garden, it's a lot different. It doesn't take practice to unclip on the road, anyone could do it, but it's far different going through rocks.
