St. Peter's Square is the center of the Vatican, a tiny state which has great significance for the whole world.The Vatican is located in the heart of Italy, within the limits of its capital. This independent state has its own army, currency and even the postal service. And here is a real open air museum of architectural masterpieces.

St. Peter's Square is the fourth largest in the world. It can contain 300 000 people. Catholics from all around the world come here to get the blessing of the supreme pontiff. The colossal obelisk stands proudly in the center of the square. Caligula brought it there from the Egyptian town of Heliopolis.

Michelangelo Buonarroti took part in the construction of St. Peter's Cathedral. Under the cathedral there are the Vatican grottoes with the tombs of popes and burials dating back to the first centuries of Christianity.
