There are times when you shouldn't try to pin down the knight with your bishop. This videos covers the good and bad of knight pinning.

  • oops, in the last example, even protecting the g4 bishop is not enough as it is attacked with both, the white light-squared bishop on e2 and the white queen on d1 so white can easily be a pawn up in material anyway...

...PS: your vids are amazing! thanks a lot for all of your tutorials Kev!

  • @majotnf please please read some of the other comments. This has already been discussed and I pointed out that even though the bishop is double attacked black will be ok *take for example Nf6, if 1. Nxd4 Nxd4 2. Bxg4 Nxg4 3. Qxg4 loses to Nxc2+ and forking the king the move, taking a pawn and rook on a1.

  • after the knight caps at d5, the bishop can move to h6 attacking the rook. and you win the knight.

  • @lg3o5 actually you don't, after Bh6 you can capture on c3. If B takes Rook, you can take bishop. If he captures your knight, you can then capture pawn on e4. This is a good exchange for black. He doesn't just lose his knight.

  • @TexTK not only youngsters and beginners

  • What do you do if rather than breaking the pin with the bishop, your opponent plays their a or h pawn forward to try to kick you off the square? Moving the bishop to the a or h file normally results in an advance of the b/g pawn, forcing the bishop to move again. Is it best to just take the knight? Or take the knight when it causes doubled pawns, but retreat if it would aid the development of their queen?

  • In the second position when the black knight takes d5 pawn...

what happens when white bishop plays Bh6 threatening rook?

  • In the last example. If white takes the pawn (knight d4) as shown, then black can take bishop e2. If white does not respond with his queen, he will lose the queen. So white must capture e2 with the queen, leaving black to move his knight on d4 to safety (or capture c6.) Material gain for black. N'est-ce pas?

  • @Bean123forjoem When they kill your knights try your best to make it an open game, dont crowd the game in the middle, because him having the knights can have the upper hand in a crowded game since they can hop, but you having bishops and him missing them, you need an open game and try to place them in a diagonal way so you cripple most of his pieces.

  • I hate players pinning my knights and capturing them afterwards if the pin is gone. How can I punish my opponents with bishops if I don't have any knights?

  • @TheBalloonfire In the aftermath of that exchange black still surrfers from the same vulnerability Kevin is discussing in the video PLUS white has developed another minor piece (possible gain in tempo) AND white's fiancettoed bishop on B2 is stronger now that black-s pawn chain has been undermined on the long diagonal.

Once again not an expert I just didnt see another response.

  • @TheBalloonfire im not an expert at all but I would think that after black plays B-B4 white could respond with C3 threatening the bishop. If black plays DxC3 capturing with the pawn white could further respond with NxC3 (protected by the bishop on B2).

    .

  • I like ur videos but u pretty much just teaches us how to win a pawn or how to defend a pawn

  • @TheBalloonfire i think with that move white could use knight from b1 to d2 bringing extra support to the knight in f3 too
