In this video, the synthesis of bromine, one of the two liquid elements at room temperature, is described. Our yield of bromine in then reacted with aluminum to form a cloud of bromine vapor and a small amount of aluminum bromide. An analogous reaction is demonstrated with powdered aluminum and powdered iodine.
The reactions in this video are:
2*NaBr (aq) + NaClO (aq) + 2*HCl (aq) → Br2 (g) + 3*NaCl (aq) + H2O (l)
3*Br2 (l) + 4*Al (s) → 2*Al2Br3 (s)
4*Al (s) + 3*I2 (s) → 2*Al2I3 (s)

Please pay close attention to the warnings presented in the video- this reaction is far too messy to perform even in a fumehood, so we would only recommend this be done outdoors. Eye protection and gloves must be worn at all times.
