This is 3DMark 2001 running in vmware workstation 6.5 trial with directx acceleration. It is running in a windows xp professional guest that itself is running on a gentoo linux host. As you can see, I get almost 9000 Points in this benchmark. That is not very much, but remember: This was recorded via gtk-recordmydesktop, that made a almost fullscreen recording with 24fps. The whole recording needed almost 10 Gigabyte space on a fast harddisk that I recorded it into.
Recording itself needed a nice amount of cpu power.

When running that benchmark without recording it, it gave me 16000 Points in the end. Thats better ;-)

And here the machine I used (not too expensive, I think):
Mainstream Asrock Mainboard with 2 GB RAM, AMD Phenom 9650 Quad Core Processor, and the Graphics Card used is a Nvidia 9600 GT.

Now's the time, linux starts to be usable for gamers! DirectX Acceleration is useful this days. And VirtualBox itself offers OpenGL Support in Windows Guests. So we have both worlds united, finally on a linux platform. We will see how it evolves in the next months.

I hope you had fun watching this. It remembered me of the old days, when I used 3dmark2001 on Win98SE and were upset, that my native graphics card could not render the horse in the later part of this benchmark would render with only 1 Frame per Second. If I rethink that - it is absolutely fantastic, what we can see here on the linux platform.

Bye!

    3DMarks: 16,208.

What's your excuse for garnering the same as this machine?

  • I don't need an excuse. For I benchmarked this inside an Windows Guest Machine that runs on a Gentoo Linux Host. My Machine has 4 Cores, that's true, but neither does this benchmark use all cores as it is a graphics card limited benchmark, nor does Virtual Box use all cores.

Nothing was tuned and last but not least, I was recording this Video while running the benchmark what also needed some performance.

Did you run that Benchmark inside an vm?

Would be interesting to know. ;-)

  • The first Pixel Shader test looks strange. For me, it's a gentle tilting pan over moonlit water. It doesn't swerve like that.
