This video is a record of the first locomotive up the branch from Pantyffynnon to Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen in over 15 years and the first ever time that a Class 66 locomotive has worked the line. The locomotive 66128 worked the 08.05 Route learning servive from Margam to Pantyffynnon. The loco then ran up the branch to G.C.G. to the East Pit site owned by Celtic Engergy. This site is expecting to produce over 2 million tonnes of Welsh Coal from this site over the next 5-6 years. The first train of wagons is expected to run on Friday 16th January 2009 depending on the success of the trials this week. A long awaited historical moment of railway development in South Wales. If you view part two of this video then you'll be able to enjoy it in the correct ratio, as these two clips were taken with two cameras due to heavy rain affecting one..Thanks

  • Great footage of a historic event. Makes a change to see somthing properly recorded as opposed to a kid wobbling a moblie phone around.

    Thanks for sharing

    Rob

  • That's very kind of you to say so and much appreciated...Bob

  • Irish Rail's class 201 Locomotive is basicaly the same with a slightly different cab. They are used on the main line Intercity and some freight work. They are 'tuned' for higher speeds than the class 66 pictured here but are esentially the same GM Loco built in Ontario Canada.

  • Thanks very much for that very interesting information, and something I wasn't aware of.....so never too old to learn something new...Bob

  • Bob you say the 66 was made in Canada.

Guess they make them and ship straight to the UK because I have never seen one

Nice sounding engine though she must be pretty powerfull looking at the boggies.

  • Thanks very much Wayne, They were built by General Motors Electro-Motive Diesel in Ontario and shipped over to the UK. They are also used in large numbers on Mainland Europe. They develop 3000 bhp...Bob
