The Calypso System: GPS for the Body

The Calypso® 4D Localization System -- referred to as GPS for the Body® -- is a breakthrough technology providing doctors a way to precisely set up prostate radiation therapy and then monitor the prostate's position during treatment. Experts at the University of Maryland Department of Radiation Oncology are the first in the region to use the Calypso technology. In this short video, Pradip Amin, M.D, associate professor of Radiation Oncology and an expert in the treatment of prostate cancer, explains why Calypso is an important advance in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Calypso technology uses tiny electromagnetic beacons, which are implanted into the prostate in an outpatient procedure prior to treatment. The beacon transponders emit radiofrequency waves which allow very accurate alignment of the prostate before each treatment session and allow the radiation oncologist to monitor the position of the prostate in real time during treatment delivery.
